What is Teledentistry?

The Future of Dentistry

If you have ever spoken to a patient on the phone or shared a patient’s chart with another dental professional you have been practicing TELEDENTISTRY! While teledentistry is a relatively new term to many dental professionals, this innovative approach to patient care has been around for decades and extensively researched by educators and various government institutions.

Teledentistry is broadly defined as a type of Telemedicine/Telehealth service that utilizes modern technology to deliver virtual dental care and education to patients remotely. Teledentistry offers several advantages, including increased access to care, convenience, cost-effectiveness, and the ability to reach underserved populations. It can be particularly useful in situations where patients face barriers to traditional dental visits, such as physical limitations, geographical distance, or time constraints.

Types of Teledentistry

Live, two-way interaction between a person (patient, caregiver, or provider) and a dental provider using video conferencing on the telephone or computer.

Transmission of patient’s health information (for example, radiographs, photographs, video, digital impressions) through a secure HIPAA compliant system to a dental practitioner, who uses the information to evaluate a patient’s condition, approve a case, or render a service outside of a real-time or live interaction.

Personal health and dental data collection from an individual in one location is transmitted to a dental provider to help monitor and assess a patient remotely.

Dental advice and/or services provided to patients via mobile devices such as cell phones and tablet computers.

Teledentistry can be used to provide oral health education, preventive care instructions, and guidance on maintaining good oral hygiene. This is especially beneficial for individuals in remote areas or with limited access to dental care

How the Teledentistry Network Works

The teledentistry network operates by connecting patients and dental professionals virtually. Here's a breakdown of how the process works:

Patient Referrals:

Patients are referred to Teledentistry companies like Dentulu from various sources, including Walgreens, insurance companies, and even emergency rooms. These patients may require emergency consultations or have specific questions about dental procedures. Teledentistry companies act as intermediaries, facilitating the connection between patients and dental professionals.

Virtual Consultations for Patients:

Licensed dentists and hygienists within the patient's state are matched with the patients seeking their services. This matching process ensures that patients are connected with professionals who are qualified and licensed to provide dental care in their jurisdiction. The types of consultations that professionals are matched with will depend on their area of expertise, license type, and any state limitations.

Earning Income for Virtual Consultations:

Dental professionals in the teledentistry network can earn income by providing virtual consultations to patients. These consultations may include emergency triaging or answering procedure-related queries. The professionals are compensated for their time and expertise in providing valuable virtual care to patients.

In addition to providing virtual consultations to patients, teledentistry jobs also offers opportunities for dental professionals to evaluate dental services for companies. Professionals can leverage their knowledge and experience to review and approve treatments offered by these companies. They can work remotely from their homes and earn income for each consultation or evaluation they review.

It's important to note that dental professionals in the teledentistry network are paid for their time and not just for approving cases. The focus is on providing excellent care to patients, and payment is based on the evaluation process. This approach allows dental professionals to provide honest, quality, and ethical treatment recommendations to all patients.

The teledentistry jobs network provides a flexible and rewarding opportunity for dental professionals to engage in virtual consultations and evaluations, ensuring access to care and quality treatment for patients while earning income from the convenience of their own homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Dentulu’s Dedicated Dentists and Dentists who subscribe to Dentulu?

Dentulu offers a premium subscription plan to dental offices who utilize our software platform to generate new patients for their office and who want to incorporate teledentistry into their practice. Dental professionals who choose to work as independent contractors for Dentulu will not have to pay for these software services and will be given various opportunities to generate income providing virtual consultations for Dentulu customers and partners.

Dentulu Dedicated Dentists and dedicated dental offices will receive exclusive offers by companies who have partnered with Dentulu and who require virtual dentists to approve their products and services.

Where will my patients come from?

Dentulu, Inc. contracts with companies such as LG Television and Walgreens who send their customers to Dentulu dentists for screenings and online consultations. Consumers also find Dentulu organically through various channels and will have the opportunity to participate in virtual consultations with dentists on our network who will get paid to screen these patients.

What types of companies use teledentistry?

The types of companies that partner with Dentulu vary based on the products and services they are providing. They include insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, clear aligner companies, dental laboratories and other companies who offer services for cosmetic dentistry, laboratory testing, removable appliances and more to consumers.

How do I get started?

Simply request to join by filling out the form on teledentistryjobs.com. Once your request is submitted, a member of our team will reach out to provide you with more details and determine if you will be a fit for Dentulu, Inc network of providers.

What is required from me?

Dentists must maintain unrestricted and active dental license(s) in the State(s) they are seeing patients whether in person or virtually. Dentists must maintain active malpractice insurance and inform Dentulu when they will be available to take calls by setting up a customized calendar of availability. Dentists will make reasonable efforts to take calls whenever they have agreed to be available and will follow their best judgment in providing approvals and consultations for patients.

Are appointments scheduled or on-demand?

Appointments can be either scheduled in advance or on-demand for emergencies. This will be based on your preference and availability. Emergency calls are usually connected to a licensed dentist within 10 minutes of the patient requesting a consultation. Non Emergency consultations and sign offs can be scheduled in advance and based on the provider’s availability.

Will I need to be available for 24/7 for on-demand emergency appointments?

While we encourage our providers to make themselves available for emergency calls we do not dictate how providers set up their availability. You have the freedom to create your own schedule and can determine when and where to take calls or consultations. We do however expect all dedicated network providers to provide a minimum of 12 hours of availability per week with the exception of holidays and planned vacations.

What about vacation time?

As an independent contractor, our Teledentistry network providers have the freedom to choose which hours/days to be available. Dentulu does not dictate your work schedule and provides you the freedom of choosing the time and location where you provide consultations. If you are taking a vacation, you can simply make yourself unavailable with a click of a button going “offline” until you are ready to return and be “on call.”

Will I take calls from anywhere in the country?

The only restriction you will have is the pre-requisite that you have an active license in the State where the patient is being treated. For example, if you are licensed in the State of California, you can see any patients in California even if you are traveling overseas. Our software will automatically match the patient with a licensed dentist in that state to ensure legal compliance and automation.

Can I choose which companies I want to work with?

Yes, providers will be matched with the companies and services they feel comfortable treating. Your profile and resume will be presented to each company with who we contract and they will review and approve you as a provider to whom they send cases for approvals. You will never be asked or required to approve any cases that you do not feel comfortable with and are expected to provide care at the same standard of care as any traditional dental office.

What determines how a patient is referred to me?

Patient referrals are determined by:

  1. Pool of dentists who have accepted to work with a specific company
  2. The State(s) in which you hold an active dental license
  3. Insurance credentialing and in-network participation (if applicable)
  4. Your availability determined solely by you when setting up your calendar

How can I get support if I have a question?

Dentulu, Inc. prides itself on its communication with the dentists in its network. There will be many support options available to our dedicated providers including email, telephone, and chat support with our company.

Will virtual dentists providing Teledentistry be able to write prescriptions if necessary?

Dentulu provides HIPAA compliant protections to secure your account and has incorporated multiple privacy and security measures to protect our providers as well as privileged patient information.

Can I stop at any time?

Your participation in our network is at will and you can discontinue your participation at any time. We do ask for a 30 day advanced notice to allow our company to replace your position and to ensure continuity of care to the patients for whom you are providing treatment.
